Mala by papuruikazuchi Mala by papuruikazuchi
108 bead mala. Glass beads with pewter charms that section it off as 21, 33, 33, 21.
The charms are an arrowhead with a purple center- I originally was going to make this one a big sun, but it wouldnt have matched the colors well. A symbol with the word 'balance' above it, a ying yang, and a dragon.

Malas are used to count mantras during meditation. You can also keep record of how many malas you have gone through. There are special mantras for different sections, like you can say one mantra 21 times, another 54 times and so on. I've used a mala before and I'd reccomend it to anyone who meditates.
My favorite mantra is "So Ham" which is basically light and dark, night and day, good and evil. It's the one that's mainly for balance, I believe.

I don't really meditate a lot and if i do it's more like dreaming awake or "watching infinite" (LOL), and i don't know how to recite mantras... But i really like malas, i think they are beautiful, and i've heard that they have some meanings like representing the compasion or the human afflictions. What could you say about the meanings?

Well, in making mine all I can really say is I used a few of my favorite things :P Favorite color, I happen to like dragons... the Yin Yang and "Balance" symbol seemed to fit well along with being aesthetically pleasing...

I did try to make it suit the usual numbering of the beads before the separations and all that, but it doesn't have that much meaning behind it when I actually think about it.
But I can say a couple of the others I made have a little more meaning for my friends, at least....
This one broke a while back, but I think my next may be a little more meaningful ;w;

I'm kinda bad at reciting mantras myself, so I stick to the two syllable mantras I can use for inhale and exhale. "Soham" works for me and it's just a universal mantra that anyone can use anytime.

"I've used a mala before and I'd reccomend it to anyone who meditates." how come? good little bit of info, it makes me want to try using one:D

Well, while you focus your mind on the meditating itself, you can also focus on the beads in your fingers. It may differ from person to person, but I find myself repeating my mantra while also focusing on keeping the beads moving as I do so. With every exhale, I move a bead to add to the count. :) If you want to try for yourself, you can get those little plasticy bracelets to give it a try! Here's what they generally look like. The ones that are sold randomly as knick-knacks might not have enough beads, but'll help show what it's like.

Woah! I think I have a beading set, but only with really, really cheap plastic beads...this encouraged me to see if I could get some nice ones. x3

hehe, thankies. x3 i tried to find a big box of round beads so i can make more, but round ones are a bit hard to come by in bulk. x.x had to buy a couple of small pouches to make this!

Awesomness!!! :iconexcitedplz: Now then, I gotta stop being so lazy and try to get stuff to make my own XD
papuruikazuchi Featured By Owner Jul 17, 2008
xD you do that. with all my charms and such, this thing costs quite a bit! x.x and it's pretty freaking long, even with these tiny beads i got....

Ooooh pretty. I wanna make perdie necklaces.
papuruikazuchi Featured By Owner Jul 17, 2008
Well, you can make it a bit smaller also. These are usually worn wrapped around the wrist because of the charms/dangles/etc. But if you make them with marker beads instead, you can wear it as a necklace. n.n
o-o of course, it's a bit of an investment. Mine's worth about 11 bucks
